Koi Pond Construction Built From Scratch in Alexandria

Here's what we were working with at the start - a flat patch of backyard lawn with no water feature, no focal point, nothing. The homeowner wanted something that would make the space feel alive. A koi pond was the answer, and we got to work digging it out from the ground up.

The excavation phase is where the real work begins. We brought in a mini excavator to shape the basin, which lets us get the depth and contour right before anything else happens. Once the dig was done, we laid the liner - a critical step that determines how well the pond holds water long-term. Getting the liner seated properly against the shaped basin walls takes patience, but it's not something you rush.

From there, it's all about the stone. We set natural boulders and smaller rock along the perimeter to lock the liner in place and give the pond its finished edge. The rock placement isn't random - each piece is chosen and positioned to look natural while also doing a structural job. That balance between form and function is what separates a pond that holds up from one that looks good in photos and falls apart in a few seasons.

The finished result speaks for itself. A full koi pond surrounded by lush plantings, natural stone edging, and two garden benches positioned right at the water's edge.
