This Fairfax backyard already had a lot going for it - a brick patio, mature trees, nice outdoor seating. But something was missing. No movement. No sound. Just a quiet yard that didn't quite pull you in. That's exactly the kind of space where a pond makes the biggest difference.
Here's where we are mid-build on this one. The liner is down, the BioFalls filter unit is being set, and we're hand-placing natural stone along the edges to build up the rock border. Every stone gets placed individually. There's no shortcut to making it look like it belongs there - it just takes time and a good eye.
The BioFalls system we're using here is one of the better filtration setups available for a pond this size. It handles biological filtration so the water stays clear without a ton of ongoing maintenance from the homeowner. That's something people don't always think about upfront - how the pond is going to function week to week once it's filled and running.
What we're building here isn't just a hole with water in it. It's a fully integrated water feature - with proper liner, filtration, rock work, and planting around the edges. When it's done, it'll look like it's been part of this yard for years. The sound of moving water right off that patio is going to change how this family uses their outdoor space entirely.
If you've been sitting on the idea of adding a pond or water feature to your yard, this is a good look at what the process actually involves. It's hands-on, detail-oriented work - and that's exactly why the end result holds up.
