We're in the early stages of a new koi pond build in Alexandria, and this is exactly the kind of project we love getting our hands on. Big backyard, mature trees, existing stonework already in place - there's a lot of character to work with here. Getting the foundation right is the whole game.
A lot of people don't realize how much goes into the dig itself. It's not just moving dirt. The shape, the depth, the grade - all of it has to be dialed in before a single liner or rock goes in. That's why we're running a Bosch rotary laser level on-site. It keeps everything true so the finished pond sits level and drains the way it's supposed to. No guesswork.
We're using a compact mini excavator to work through the space without tearing up the surrounding yard and gardens. In a tighter residential backyard like this one, precision matters. You can't just bring in heavy equipment and hope for the best. The excavator lets us get into the basin cleanly while protecting what's already there.
Koi specifically need a pond that's built right from the ground up. Proper depth, good water volume, smart placement relative to the sun and surrounding trees - all of that affects how healthy the fish stay long-term. Cutting corners on the front end almost always shows up as a problem later. We plan it out so it holds up for years, not just looks good on day one.
This one is shaping up to be something special, and we're just getting started. Follow along as we move through the build - stone placement, liner, filtration, the works. The finished product is going to be worth the wait.
